What to Read Before You Buy an Exchange

Everything here answers a question someone asked us on a call. None of it is a product tour.

Most of what is written about buying exchange software is written by people selling it, and it shows: every article concludes that you should buy the thing. These are ordered by the decision they help with rather than by date, and several of them argue against buying anything yet.

Where a page here would compete with an article we have already written, we did not write the page. The article is linked instead.

Before you choose a platform

The decisions that constrain every later one. Getting these wrong is the expensive kind of wrong, and none of them is a software question.

How the delivery models differ

White label, full source, turnkey and custom are four different commercial arrangements, and the words are used loosely enough that two vendors can mean opposite things by the same one.

What the platform actually has to do

The parts nobody demos, and the parts that decide whether an exchange survives its second year.

FAQ

Questions you might have

Is this everything you have written?

No — the blog carries the rest. This page is the material that maps to a decision.

Why is there no guide on picking a jurisdiction?

Because we would be guessing. Licensing advice belongs to a lawyer in the market you are entering, and a vendor writing it is a vendor overreaching.

Do these argue for buying?

Some argue against it. Building in-house is right for a few teams, and the launch checklist is honest about which.
